Countdown to City Break 2008 begins
Show to host seminar on low-cost airline carriers and travel trends

With less than a week remaining, anticipation is building as Belgrade prepares to host City Break 2008 from 9th–10th June.

A collective buying power of over £500,000 million will descend on the city to address key trends influencing the City Break travel sector and to meet with new and emerging European destinations and suppliers.

Countdown to City Break 2008 begins

The final line-up of exhibitors at the Belgrade Fair now totals over 200 specialist suppliers of city breaks. Hailing from over 70 European destinations, suppliers will meet with an unrivalled list of pre-qualified international hosted buyers. One-to-one meetings will follow Reed Travel Exhibitions’ highly successful pre-scheduled appointment system allowing buyers to select 15-minute appointments with up to 30 chosen exhibitors.

A diverse range of capital and secondary cities have confirmed their participation at City Break 2008 including Athens, Amsterdam, Berlin, Bratislava and Zurich; plus a host of city-based hotels, destination management companies (DMCs) and other city-based suppliers. New exhibitors at the show include Rimini, Podgorica, Budva, Toledo, Las Palmas, Biarritz and Maribor. Virginie de Chasteauneuf, Sales Manager of JACOB Online (UK), a third-time exhibitor, commented: “City Break is a great opportunity to update people on new destinations. We have a new contracting office in Belgrade so this is a great opportunity to contract more hotels and to offer familiarisation trips to any agents who could be interested in discovering more about the Balkan region in conjunction with the show.”

Over 20 suppliers from host city Belgrade and Novi Sad will use the platform as key opportunity to promote the city’s wide range of hotels, travel services and tourist attractions to over 100 buyers and 50 European journalists. Exhibitors with specialised local knowledge include: Tourist Organization of Belgrade, JAT Airways (Serbian official airline), Hotel Continental Belgrade, and Grand Casino Belgrade.

City Break 2008 is sponsored by European Cities Marketing, the leading professional tourism network for European cities, and will take place prior to ECM’s annual summer conference in Belgrade.

Catherine Vaughan, Marketing Manager for City Break 2008 said:

“The show has an excellent track record for suppliers who are looking to benefit from the city break market and to promote their product and destinations. And by coming to Belgrade we are highlighting how the city break market has matured as consumers look for new and exciting destinations.”

Airlines Fuel City Break Market
City Break 2008 discusses the state of the aviation sector
Press information for release 10th June 2008

Reed Travel Exhibitions’ business-to-business show dedicated to the city break market, City Break 2008, commenced with a lively panel discussion on the state of the aviation sector.

With the growth of the European city break market attributed to the low-cost airlines, the panel discussion was a fitting subject area for the gathered professionals. Overseen by respected aviation consultant, John Strickland, Director of JLS Consulting, senior representatives from key European airlines – Arian van der Werff from Transavia.com, Vladimir Ognjenovic from JAT Airlines and Michael Whitfield from Easyjet – made up the panel.

Collectively representing a range of opinion from traditional carriers to focused and pan-European low-cost carriers, the panel, concentrating on ‘route development in a challenging climate’, addressed the crisis conditions facing the airline sector:

Fuel prices and the global credit crunch
The growing tax burden on airlines
The sensitive issues of airlines and the environment.

The panel explained some of the aspects of the low-cost model and looked at positive opportunities including lessons that traditional airlines can learn from low-cost carriers and the promotion and marketing of new routes to city destinations.

The consensus among the panellists was that whilst fuel prices were spiralling, acting to cut costs would be the key to survival for airlines. Panellists concurred that it would be the strength of a company’s balance sheet that would determine its financial future.

Despite the bleak economic backdrop, there was confidence that airlines could continue to grow by choosing their new routes carefully and adding capacity on the most successful routes. However, the issue of rising airport costs and governments’ propensity to increase taxes on flight tickets became a topic of discussion.

The airlines raised their concern that, whilst taxes were being levied and justified on environmental grounds, there was no evidence of the funds generated being invested in research into alternative fuel sources or improving engine efficiency.

Traditional airlines were also learning from the low-cost sector’s rigorous focus on cost and sales techniques such as online bookings.

Despite the negative financial climate, the panel discussed the possibility of opening new routes. It was agreed that not only was two-way traffic flow important to the success of a route, but marketing support by the local city and its partners was imperative. The airlines pointed out that risk sharing is an ongoing requirement that goes well beyond the initial launch of a new route.

The widely reported issue of carbon emissions generated by airlines was also addressed, with panellists confirming that low-cost carriers in particular were investing in new planes which are more fuel efficient and have lower carbon emissions. Improvements were needed on the part of airports and air traffic control to reduce taxiing time on the ground and to reduce circuitous flight routings, both of which increase fuel consumption.

John Strickland said: “Despite extremely tough market conditions our panellists expressed confidence about the future. Each of the participating companies is opening new routes and believes that by using sound business management and choosing the right markets it will survive.”

Mark Walsh, City Break Show Director said: “The climate for airlines has changed dramatically since the start of the city break phenomenon in 2000. Eight years on, the market has matured to such an extent that secondary cities too are seeing huge growth in their inbound tourism. The airlines have given a strong message to all cities that the short break market is key. Creating a win–win situation through partnership marketing and sharing risk will ensure that both airlines and cities continue to benefit from the short break tourist.”

City Break 2009 to go to Gothenburg

Sweden to host key European business-to-business travel event

Reed Travel Exhibitions are delighted to announce that the next destination for the City Break show will be Gothenburg, Sweden.

City Break 2009 will be the fourth show dedicated solely to the European city break market and reflects the strength of a travel sector driven by low-cost carriers. Belgrade, Athens and Helsinki have already hosted the exhibition that draws together Europe’s leading destinations, hotels, airlines and ancillary suppliers under one roof.

Pre-scheduled buyer appointments are the key feature of City Break; City Break 2008 secured the best ever quality buyers with a collective buying power in excess of £500m. The 2009 event will be the first City Break exhibition not to be held in a capital city; the move reflects the strength of Europe’s secondary cities as popular tourist destinations.

At the gateway to western Sweden, Gothenburg is said to be the gastronomic capital of Sweden and attracted over 442,000 tourist arrivals in 2007.

Mark Walsh, Group Exhibition Director, City Break said: “We are extremely pleased to be going to Gothenburg in 2009, thereby widening the perception of the City Break sector as applying to secondary cities too. As a destination, Gothenburg offers a rich culture and a maritime heritage whilst being the gateway to Sweden’s commanding scenery.”

Claes Bjerkne, CEO of Goteborg & Co said: “We are very excited at being awarded host destination for City Break 2009, 15–16 June. We are looking forward to putting together a successful event for both City Break 2009 and the European Cities Tourism Conference.”

Beograd najbolji domacin konferencije "City break"
