OBJECTIVES: Vocabulary - presentation and practice;
Students should acquire new lexical items related to wonders of the modern world; should comprehend and use them appropriately.Students should also develop the ability to read for information, to expand vocabulary around the topic of discoveries and inventions, and to encourage lots of fluency-based speaking pracice.
APPROACH: Communicative Approach and Direct Method
PROCEDURES:
I PSYCHOLOGICAL WARM-UP AND LINGUISTIC INTRODUCTION (10 min.) The teacher writes Wonders of the Modern World on the board and starts with WH -questions, thought provoking questions, yes/no questions
1. Do you know any world wonder? (the teacher is supposed to elicit as many wonders as the students can think of, for example: television, mobile phones, and impressive modern architecture like the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur)
2. The students are asked to look at the chart in their books and check if they understand the topics in A by referring them to the photos. The students are asked to match the topics in A with the items in B in pairs.
II PRESENTATION (15 min.)
1 Teacher retells the lesson by explaining the unfamiliar words beforehand
2 Teacher invites the students to read the lesson
3 Teacher writes the explanations and the synonyms of the new words on the chalkboard.
III PRACTICE (10 min.)
1. The students do the exercise in the book (they answer questions related to modern wonders)
2. The students, together with the teacher, check the answers they have written
IV PRODUCTION (10 min.)
The students are invited to talk about themselves:
• What are your favourite wabsites?
• When did you last travel by plane? Where were you going?
• Are there any stories about health care in the news at the moment?
• What sporting events are taking place now or in the near future?
V CHECKING/CLOSING
